About Our BSL-3 Laboratory

Our Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) Lab is certified annually and is one of the first to be certified for use in Thailand by an international third party organization. It has since become instrumental in the study of risk group 3 pathogens including multiple pandemic-causing viruses that have plagued the country like the Influenza A H1N1 virus, the avian flu H5N1 and the most recent SARS-CoV-2 virus. We continue to update and improve our facilities to match the developing international standards and, in turn, advance the quality of our research.

The History of Our BSL3 Lab

In 1997, our BSL-3 laboratory was established to accommodate HIV as well as Tuberculosis research. The AIDS epidemic became the biggest problem that the health profession in Thailand was facing at the time. This allowed an opportunity to organize a facility that would aid in conducting research to combat epidemic-causing diseases such as AIDS and Tuberculosis which not only have serious health implications, but also substantial economic consequences. Since then, our facility enabled the study of outbreak-causing viruses including the avian Influenza (H5N1) in 2004 and the Influenza A Outbreak (H1N1) in 2009.

In 2015, our BSL-3 laboratory became the first to be officially certified in Thailand by an international third party that complies with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Biosafety of Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL). Presently, our BSL-3 lab continues to be instrumental in conducting important research involving important viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
